Three persons charged with criminal conspiracy, attempted homicide and illegal possession of firearms at a Makurdi Magistrates’ Court were on Friday remanded in prison by the court.
The accused, Igbasuwe Orjirne, Terfa Agaga and Godwin Ukem, are all of New Ornyev Layout, North Bank, Makurdi.
The Magistrate, Mrs Theresa Wergba, ordered the remand of the accused at the Federal Maximum Prison, Makurdi, to enable the court to sort out the issue of jurisdiction on the matter.
Wergba, who did not take any plea from the accused, consequently adjourned the case to Nov. 11, 2014.
The prosecutor, Sgt. Patrick Sunday, who filed the First Information Report on the matter, had told the court that a letter of complaint, which contained allegations against the accused, was written and signed by 10 landlords in the layout.
Sunday said that the landlords forwarded the letter to the ‘C’ Division Police Headquarters in Makurdi on Sept. 5, 2014.
He told the court that allegation of criminal activities in the community was also leveled against two of the accused and three other persons.
“When a team of police surveillance patrol led by Sgt. Mathias Agude was sent to arrest the suspects, they opened fire on sighting the police vehicle.
“Sgt. Agude was injured on his hand while Cpl. Aondover Magistrate was shot on the stomach but managed to escape.
“When the police swung into action, the three accused persons were arrested.
“One locally-made pistol with nine rounds of 7.6 mm live ammunition was recovered from them while other suspects are still at large,’’ Sunday said.
He told the court that investigation into the matter was still in progress and asked for adjournment.
The prosecutor said that the offences contravened sections 97 and 230 of the Penal Code Laws of Benue state, 2004 and section 3(1) of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provision) Act, Cap. RII Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004. (NAN)
