No LG Elections in Benue State

The Benue State Governor, Dr. Gabriel Suswam, has declared that going by the provision of the law passed by the State House of Assembly, it is impossible to conduct local government elections before November this year, when the tenure of the present chairmen expires.

Dr. Suswam, who disclosed this while briefing journalists shortly after the PDP Caucus meeting at the New Banquet Hall, Makurdi, maintained that given the circumstances they have found themselves in it might not be practicable to start preparing for elections between now and November.

The governor maintained that in view of this, the only option left is to have caretaker committees, even as he expressed optimism that the local government elections would hold before the end of his administration.

He also said that the meeting resolved on how members would conduct themselves and strategies to win the forthcoming elections n the state.

Also speaking, the speaker, Benue State House of Assembly, Barr. Terhile Ayua, enumerated some other decisions taken to include strengthening of the party, forthcoming elections, have a level playing ground for all the governorship aspirants, resolve to set up a disciplinary body to ensure the PDP members conduct themselves in accordance with the laws of the party, and t ensure hitch-free elections that would lead to the victory of the party.

He also said that the members expressed their desire to hold meetings at all leadership levels in order to address the issue of zoning in the party and the security issue was also discussed to enable the state to have safe and secure environment for the progress of the state.

In his remarks, the State PDP chairman, Dr. Agbo Emmanuel, said the agenda was not to galvanize the party, but ensure that the party does not operate under a languorous atmosphere, as there are over 30 aspirants seeking just one seat, adding that if not properly managed, the benefit may turn out to be for the opposition party.

“We do not intend to have a repeat of what transpired in the 2011 general elections where we had a lot of people leaving for the opposition and three series of meetings like this as we have started will be sustained to ensure that before the election, during the election and post-elections will be able to sort out the grey areas for us to have victory”, he stressed.
