Nigeria: Idoma Women Push for Power Shift

Idoma women under the auspices of ‘Mothers of Zone C’ in Benue South senatorial district of Benue State yesterday pressed their demand for power to shift from the Tiv speaking area of the state to the Idoma axis in 2015.

Speaking during a visit to the state chairman of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Emmanuel Agbo at the party’s secretariat in Makurdi, the women who dressed in white lace with a red and black head tie to depict the Idoma culture, said the zone C should be allowed to produce the next governor of the state.

“Since creation of Benue in 1976, zone ‘C’ has never produced a governor for the state. There is need for power to shift to zone ‘C’, premised on the principles of equity, justice, fairness and good governance as enshrined in the constitution of PDP and of the federal republic of Nigeria,” they said.

Mrs. Susan Adoba who spoke on behalf of the women, said the PDP since the current democratic dispensation has continued to win governorship election in the state and is expected to win by next year.

Adoba added that it would only be logical for the power to rotate to zone C in the forth coming election because they have never been elected governor.

Responding, Dr. Agbo thanked the women for taking the lead and advised them to articulate their position diplomatically to win the favour of the other two zones as 14 local government belonging to the Tiv people are more than just nine councils of the zone C.
