Herdsmen kill one, raze villages in fresh Benue attack

At least, one person has been killed while others sustained varying degrees of injuries in a renewed attack on some communities in Okpokwu Local Government Area of Benue State.

Gunmen, believed to be Fulani militia, had in the early hours of Tuesday, attacked  Efeche-Idobe, Efeche-Aiona in Edumoga, Odokpo-Okpoga, Adiga both of Okpoga South and in the process, killed a youth leader.

They assailants allegedly cut off and took away the victim’s head  while his two children and wife were matcheted and were said to be receiving medical attention in a hospital in Makurdi, the Benue State capital.

One of the victims, Ejembi Agbo, who spoke to The PUNCH in Makurdi on Tuesday, said the attackers had razed the four villages and retreated in a hurry.

Meanwhile the four villages have been deserted as the natives have fled to Okpoga, the council’s headquarters, for the safety.

Presenting the matter on the floor of the Benue State House of Assembly  on Tuesday, Olofu Ogwuche, representing Okpokwu State Constituency,  said several houses and property worth millions of naira,  were destroyed.

The Benue State House of Assembly, in a resolution, directed the State Emergency Management Agency and the Okpokwu LG to provide relief materials for those displaced by the attack.
