In the wake of Senator David Mark’s declaration of interest in contesting the Benue South senatorial district elections consecutively for the fifth time and winning on all previous occasions, it has become clear that there is no one who can challenge him; even earlier doubters have accepted the inevitable fate. Along the way, the likes of Alhaji Usman Abubakar also know as Young Alhaji and General Lawrence Onoja to mention but a few have been swept aside as they tried to challenge Senator Mark. This time the State Governor, Dr Gabriel Suswam has declared Mark’s position incontestable as far as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is concerned and top Idoma politicians have all sung the same tune.
Mark who doubles as the senate president is the most famous, all-powerful, all-conquering Idoma politician and has nothing to worry about, even without voluntary support, he has the financial wherewithal to wave his political wand of influence in his favour. So it looks all done and dusted, but could there be one more twist? Could they be taking someone for granted? Could the man Tuface Idibia give the Senate President a run for his money?
Innocent Ujah Idibia better known as Tuface Idibia is a Nigeria musician who also hails from the same ethnic group as Senator David Mark. Many think he has everything it takes to contest and win any election in Nigeria, examples of celebrities-turned-successful-politicians abound and his distinguished musical career spanning about two decades show he can be successful in politics too. A multi-award winner, Tubaba as he is also called have received one MTV Europe music award, one world music award, five Headies awards, four Channel O music video awards, and one BET award amongst several nominations for his musical work. That is not all, he holds the prestigious international youth ambassador for peace summit and Nigeria youth merit awards for his contribution to youth development in Nigeria. Tuface is no doubt a hugely popular figure that has made his kinsmen proud and continues to gain admirations nationwide, so much that the Oba of Benin gave him a special honour.
The father of six is also a philanthropist; he has established an NGO called Tuface reach-out foundation with the motto, service to humanity, but it remains to be seen if he will take this service to Benue south senatorial district as a Senator. 2015 elections have already witnessed a spate of celebrities (even less popular ones) contesting for political offices. The likes of Desmond Elliot, Alexander Adigun (9ice) and Tony Tetula have all taken the bull by its horns, so I wouldn’t bet against seeing Tuface on the ballot paper come 2015. For now it remains the imagination of a crazy fan, but one thing is sure, that it will take something really special to beat Senator David Mark.
