BIRS plans to sue University of Agriculture and the Benue State University

The Chairman, Benue State Board of Internal Revenue Services, Mr. Gabriel Asen, said on Friday that the board had concluded plan to sue the managements of the Federal University of Agriculture and the Benue State University all in Makurdi for alleged tax evasion.

Asen, who spoke with our correspondent in Makurdi, the state capital, stressed the need for the people to pay their taxes.

He said, “The Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi, and the Benue State University, Makurdi, owed the BIRS about N4bn and we have concluded arrangement to sue them so as to ensure compliance with the state tax laws.

“The breakdown shows that the Federal University of Agriculture owed N2.3bn between January 2011 and June 2013 while the state university owed N1.3bn between January 2005 and April 2012.”

The chairman said that the tax policy of the state was friendly hence the improvement in the board’s revenue.
