FULANI herdsmen grazing in Benue State have been directed to register with Meitei – Allah Cattle Breeders’ Association to determine the number of herdsmen with the virtue of sustaining cordiality with the local communities.
Secretary of the association, Alhaji Bala Usman who made the indication yesterday during a meeting with Governor Gabriel Suswam at Government House, regretted that at the moment, most of the cattle rearers were yet to report to the appropriate authorities after the order was issued sometimes ago.
Alhaji Usman noted that some herdsmen grazing in the state are those hired by other cattle owners, who have no good knowledge of their decent and criminal antecedents.
Speaking on behalf of the association’s president, he expressed grief at the recent raping of three girls by some herdsmen and killing of two of them, vowing that the culprits in the alleged incidence must be identify and prosecuted to serve as deterrent to others.
The Meitei Allah Cattle Breeders Secretary further wondered why the Fulani herdsmen would continue to make trouble with Tiv farmers, who have allowed them to resume grazing in their areas despite the recent crisis. He urged them to always fish out criminal elements in their mix and appealed to the Tiv farmers to remain calm.
Earlier, Governor Gabriel Suswam intimated the Meitei Allah leader about the heinous attack on three Tiv girls, rape and subsequent killing of two of them by Fulani herdsmen in the area. The Governor urged the Fulani leaders to adopt measures that will stop such occurrence in future and to fish out those that perpetuated the heinous act for appropriate sanctions.
