8,000 Students to Participate in 7th National School Sports Festival at Otukpo

The National School Sports federation has announced that the 7th National School Sports Festival will take place in Otukpo, Benue State with at least 8,000 students from various schools in Nigeria taking part.

The chairman of the federation, Ibrahim Kano, in an address to journalists on Thursday in Abuja, said the event themed, Mark of Excellence, would have the Senate President, David Mark, as guest of honour.

Mr. Kano said 19 scoring events had been lined up for the annual event with the introduction of cricket to the games.

He revealed that the National Sports Commission has given a N25million grant to support the cause.

He, however, added that the federation still needed an additional N75million to complete the required N100million budgeted for the festival.

“We are organising the festival in order to help the children develop mentally,” he said. “All these is done in order to discover talents and it will not be necessary for athletes to shave beards and hairs to make them look younger.”

According to him, the sporting event was opened to children under 17 for the senior secondary schools, under 15 for the junior secondary schools and under 12 for the primary schools.

“The federation will have the job of picking up these children and training them for skills acquisition. Ours is to train them for the mental skills. It’s the duty of the grassroots and the national sports commission to start working with them,” he said.

The sports festival is to hold from November 6 to 16 in Oturkpo, Benue State.
