The League of Idoma Professors (LIP) has expressed concern over the delay in the take-off of the College of Health Sciences in Otukpo, Benue State.
The College of Health Sciences was approved as a campus of the University of Agriculture, Makurdi, with a Teaching Hospital in Otukpo to service the College but was upgraded to the Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo but later reversed to the status of the College of Health Sciences.
LIP in a statement signed by its secretary, Prof Ediga Agbo, said it was worried that the campus which was duly established after having met all statutory requirements of government and relevant regulatory agencies was yet to commence its functions two years after approval.
It said though the project might have been stalled due to lack of funds, it was not clear if the university had ever captured it in its budget estimates to the Federal Government.
It said, “Recent developments give cause for great concern as we have been made to understand that following the request by the University to the NUC for a resource verification visit to enable the College to enroll students, the NUC responded that the request to run the College of Health Sciences is outside the mandate of the University.”
The professors said they considered the developments disturbing as the college was established two years ago with the full participation and approval of NUC.
